The Benefits and Limitations of Dedicated Hosting

Web Hosting Sites › Dedicated Server Hosting

Dedicated hosting is the Cadillac of the web hosting world. If you decide to take this route for your web hosting needs, it is important to know the benefits and limitations to save time and money. Dedicated hosting is favored because of the single server devoted to your website, however, this is not a wise decision for small businesses with a limited budget, especially those starting up. Prior to making a final decision, consider the following advantages and disadvantages.

A dedicated server is a web hosting plan that allows you to pay a monthly fee for space, bandwidth and other services in a data hosting center. You have the option of using your servers and equipment, known as colocation hosting, or you can use the web host’s provided equipment. Each has their subsequent pros and cons.

The primary advantages of a dedicated hosting plan include:

• Enhanced security and performance
• Full control over the server’s software and configuration
• Improved flexibility
• Upgrades whenever you choose

The first benefit is the enhancement of the security and performance which is not found with other types of hosting. Since you are the only website or group of websites on the server, there are no other individuals on the server that could cause harm to your website. Shared hosting commonly hosts hundreds or thousands of other websites on the same server. Also, vital system resources like storage and bandwidth are not be eaten up by other websites thus improving performance.

The second advantage is the amount of control you have over the server’s software and configuration. Owners have the ability to use Linux or Windows as their primary operating system and install scripts or applications to improve the hosting experience. They also have the capability to configure the server based on the needs of the website. Owners have full administrative access to the server.

Third, you are granted much more flexibility with regards to expansion. Since you are the only account on the server, expanding is quite simple. The final benefit is you can upgrade the hardware and software whenever a new patch is released. Unfortunately, due to the size of many shared web hosting providers, they are unable to expedite the implementation of software upgrades.

On the other hand, there are a few disadvantages to dedicated hosting including:

• Cost
• Experience
• Responsibility

The first limitation of dedicated hosting is the cost. To most individuals, this is also the most important aspect of any web hosting provider. Due to all of the advantages of this type of hosting, you will be paying for them. Therefore, it is imperative to assess your current and future needs prior to signing up with a dedicated host. For those on a limited budget, this is not the route you should take.

The second disadvantage is the amount of experience needed to successfully run a website on a dedicated host. You control all updates and upgrades of the hardware and software as well as ensuring security is at the highest level. All server functions are in your hands and must be continuously tweaked for optimal performance. The final con is the responsibility involved with ensuring that daily operations are efficient. If you are unable to dedicate the effort, this may not your best option.

Dedicated hosting boasts many advantages and few disadvantages. Just remember this, if you are a mid-sized to large company, dedicated hosting may be your best option. However, for those small businesses on a budget, look for something more realistic.
